Clare Fulton, Literacy Consultant
B.Ed. (Hons), Mont Nursery (Dip), Mont Primary (Dip)
Clare Fulton is a qualified, experienced primary and nursery teacher who has worked with children in all stages of primary school, in a variety of mainstream and Additional Support Needs settings. The first Scottish trainer for Jolly Learning, she has travelled extensively throughout Scotland, speaking at conferences and providing Professional Learning in Literacy, working with Local Authority Literacy Leaders, Senior Management Teams, Teachers and Support Staff to implement a comprehensive literacy programme for Primaries 1-7.
Training includes an overview of a complete literacy programme for primary schools, an explanation of how it is taught and lots of ideas for classroom activities and practical, meaningful learning. It incorporates synthetic phonics, grammar, spelling and punctuation, starting by building firm foundations and then building on them.
A former National Literacy Trust Leader, Clare was invited in 2013 by the Ministry of Education in Oman to deliver training to its Inspectors and Trainers. Jolly Phonics was subsequently implemented as the key literacy programme in schools across Oman and teachers, pupils and parents are now delighted to be reaping its benefits.
Working in both mainstream and ASN settings, Clare has taught every primary stage and has repeatedly seen the growth in confidence and self-esteem of pupils as they have learned to read and write.
Having delivered the National Young Readers' Programme for the National Literacy Trust, she has worked in conjunction with Dundee Repertory Theatre staff to give young people the chance to perform on a professional stage, working with scripts and learning skills of communication, voice projection, intonation, discipline and expression. She also uses drama and puppetry in her work and has advised schools on activities and active learning opportunities to highlight the use of language for Literacy Day, Literacy Week and World Book Day.
Based in Scotland, Clare is willing to travel to any location in which there is a need for literacy training.
